Looking Back: Mary Black Memorial Hospital

Niki Ververelli - Wednesday, July 30, 2014

One of the first projects completed by DJVI is the Mary Black Memorial Hospital in Spartanburg, South Carolina in 1968. Dr. Black opened Mary Black Memorial Hospital in 1925, along with his two sons who were also physicians. But instead of naming the hospital after himself he named it after his wife, Mary, to acknowledge her dedication to her family, church and community. Construction cost exceeded $2M; total cost of land, building, furnishing and equipment was approximately $3.5M. The 103-bed, 5-building complex contains approximately 67,000 square feet, is located on a 30-acre parcel of land. Notably, the hospital is still in operation today as part of the Mary Black Health System.

Here, you can see the April 26, 1968 Spartanburg Herald Journal newspaper supplement highlighting the hospital’s opening. We have the original copy here in the office, so cool!
